IW dev provides small update on issues studio is looking into

Infinity Ward’s Co MP Design Director has mentioned on Twitter some of the feedback points they are aware of in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare after seeing some of the feedback from this weekend.

In a tweet, Cecot noted four things that fans have been talking about:

  • Footstep Audio
  • Claymore Interaction/Feedback
  • Spawns
  • Player Battle Chatter in One Life Modes

This is not the full list of feedback they are looking into, but some of the high priority complaints from fans thus far beyond map design and matchmaking.

The studio has been releasing patch updates throughout the weekend to the game to address many of the issues that fans have been experiencing, including crashing bugs and other related issues. Patch notes for the newest update, 1.05, is available here.

We’ll update this post as more is shared by the development team.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare being review-bombed on Metacritic over portrayal of Russia

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s review score on Metacritic has been dramatically impacted by review-bombers this past week.

The negative sentiment comes from users who are claiming to be “upset” about how the game is portraying Russia as the main enemy throughout the game.

First reported by Polygon, the game’s score has dropped to 3/10 because of the spam of content by users who didn’t like how Russia was portrayed. Some comments say “Russophobia is not appropriate, ‘dear’ Activision” and calling out the company for showcasing Russian military committing war crimes throughout the story.

People even commenting and reviewing asking why Activision does not highlight America’s war crimes but only Russia.

“Russophobia is not appropriate, ‘dear’ Activision,” says the comment. “There is no gray morality in this game, only bad Russians and good Americans. Can you show us hundreds of American war crimes all over the world in your next game?”

The game is a fictional game, set in a fictional world about events happening in Modern times.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s campaign has been a worrisome topic for mainstream media because of how real the campaign is and the stories it portrays. Activision has used Russia as an enemy in previous games, but this one pits the country as committing acts of war crimes with gassing children, murdering civilians, and plotting against countries in the Middle East.

Modern Warfare physical sales higher than Black Ops 4 in UK during launch weekend

The results from the first weekend of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare sales from the UK are in, and it’s looking good for Activision.

The UK charts revealed that in terms of physical sales, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare sold 39% more than Black Ops 4 did in its opening weekend. The physical sales of Modern Warfare are lower than that of WWII, but with digital sales combined, is expected to be on par.

In UK, 62% of sales are on PS4, while 38% of sales are on Xbox One.

This put Call of Duty: Modern Warfare at #1 on the UK charts for the week, taking down FIFA 20 which was sitting at #1 since its launch in late September.

Activision has not provides launch weekend sales data as of right now, but many analysts expect Modern Warfare to be the best selling game of 2019.

Quick Play Filter in Modern Warfare updated with separate 10v10 modes

Infinity Ward has released a new playlist update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on October 27 with a few changes to the Quick Play filter in MP.

Players have been asking for the ability to separate between 6v6 and 10v10 modes in the game, and it looks like Infinity Ward is responding to that in this update.

The Quick Play filter in the game now has been updated to have “TDM 20 Player” and “DOM 20 Player” so that players who don’t want to play 10v10 can uncheck those and be placed only in 6v6 modes and maps.

It’s not clear if this filter selection will stay permanently or just temporary update, but it’s nice to see Infinity Ward responding and providing changes that fans have been asking for.

We’ll update this post when/if Infinity Ward provides more details.

Opinion: Infinity Ward missed the mark with map design in Modern Warfare

There’s been a lot of conversations surrounding the map design in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Everyone of course has their own opinions about it and what they think the maps should be like in the game.

I posted a Twitter thread this morning on the maps which sparked some more debate on this topic, and I wanted to expand a bit more on my overall thoughts on the map and map design in this year’s game.

I’ve been playing Call of Duty since Call of Duty 4, and there have been a lot of different map designs and styles in Call of a Duty ranging from the 3 lane design to larger maps that pissed people off.

One of the big things Infinity Ward has been echoing to us is that they took into a lot of consideration the fact that 3 lane maps were getting boring for a lot of people, and that they didn’t see the “fun” in some of those map designs.

During the review event in LA last week, one of the things the developer mentioned was that the two leads who designed the maps for this years title were the same who designed the maps in Call of Duty 4 and Modern Warfare 2. But does that matter?

The issue I see with that is, times have changed. Some people have stuck to nostalgia about MW2 and the game design, but others see that there’s issues with the game that in today’s world, this generation wouldn’t love MW2 as to how it was originally loved because of the glitches and overall experience.

The maps in Modern Warfare, truth be told, aren’t great. They’re….too much? Some maps have a lot more windows, openings, alley ways, areas to get shot from, and a lot more happening. And there’s no need for many of those either. Some maps can be cut in half for 6v6 or have choke points changed, but I’ve never seen Call of Duty developers dramatically change launch maps; they just implement feedback into DLC maps.

The design of them almost feels based on a combination of Battlefield and Call of Duty.

I get reminded of comparing this to Call of Duty: WWII. That game has 3 lane symmetrical maps, but those maps were boring. I think that’s a best way to describe WWII maps. 3 lanes, yes. But looked and played very…boring. Nothing exciting about them. And in many ways, that’s Modern Warfare maps. Large maps that are just filled with too many openings and space or not enough players and makes the game boring. And I did a post on WWII maps, and how the maps were limited in number and the maps weren’t great. And it feels like we’re repeating that experience again.

Gun Runner is an example of the Modern Warfare map that is actually good — it has 3 lane structure, and not too many choke points. It has easily accessible areas of the maps, and feels like a traditional Call of Duty map.

Then there’s a map like Aniyah Palace. Who thought this worked for 10v10? It’s way too large for that. It needs more players, which is why l am still confused that this map is only 10v10. At the review event, it was 20v20 and that was fun. A lot of players. Less running around like mad to get to the opposite side as there was players everywhere. Action all the time. It’s still big map, but it did not feel boring and empty.

And then there’s Piccadilly. When I first played this, I enjoyed it. It was reminding me of Modern Warfare 3 map designs, which had a good variety of maps. Then I really played it. And it’s one big circle? One huge circle. Literally. And it has way too many places to camp.

And that’s the next issue with these maps: camping. Infinity Ward noted they wanted to accommodate more play styles in Modern Warfare, these maps almost promote camping because of how many places exist to sit and wait for enemies to come to you versus having to go to them. But those campers are annoying. And without dead silence as a perk, there’s no way to counter the loud footsteps that campers are waiting for unless you use the field upgrade. But the field upgrade is limited in usage.

So where do we go from here? Infinity Ward has to deliver the maps in the post launch content season, and luckily, they’ve removed the Season Pass, so post launch maps will be free.

Will there be remastered maps or new maps is something to still wait and see, but with this game, being a re-imagination of the series, there’s room for remastered maps in this game.

But, overall, summarizing thoughts: Infinity Ward missed the mark with the map designs in this game. It’s similar to Call of Duty: Ghosts. The maps were large and boring to play. In this game, there’s too many places for players to hide or shoot out from.

New Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Update Released; Full Patch Notes Listed

Infinity Ward has rolled out a new update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. This Day 1 update doesn’t make any major changes to the game, but it does fix a few of the bugs in the game. The full patch notes are listed below.

In GameSpot’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare review in progress, Kallie Plagge wrote, “The pitfalls of Spec Ops don’t detract from what Modern Warfare does well. Realism mode is an excellent addition to the slate, and although not all the new multiplayer modes are great, Gunfight and the Night Vision playlist are refreshing standouts. And while the campaign ends up playing it safe in the end, it’s still a memorable one, and it lays a strong foundation for where the Modern Warfare series could go from here.”

Call Of Duty October 25 Update Patch Notes

  • Backend fixes to help prevent against crashing across all platforms–if you experience a crash, please let us know
  • Fix for a bug where players could earn more points when shooting specific vehicles while having Pointman equipped
  • Improved ADS while using weapons without scopes on Xbox
  • In some instances, some players were not able to complete the Highway mission due to an exfil bug
  • Fix for the “Best of the Best” challenge not tracking progress
  • Fix for the “Elite Sniper” challenge not displaying the correct description
  • Fix for various camos not unlocking during progression
  • Fix for the unlock criteria for the “Double Cross” reticle not progressing past 4
  • Fix for the description and requirements needed to unlock some optic scopes in Gunsmith
  • Fix for an exploit in Gunsmith when using mouse and keyboard

Later today, Ground War will be added to Modern Warfare’s queue of multiplayer modes. Modern Warfare’s largest multiplayer mode is currently unavailable–just like the game’s NVG mode, which was removed at launch with an update that also implemented a few bug fixes. Currently, you can only queue into Quick Play, Gunfight, Cyber Attack, Realism, and Private Match.
